Road trip with the family

I'm currently in Arizona visiting my parents like I usually do whenever they're back in the states... but this trip was a little different. Normally I'm only here during thanksgiving and christmas and the trip can last up to a week depending on what our schedules look like. We usually just bum around, eat out, go shopping, play golf, and watch movies. That's it. Rarely do we spend time like we did this past week.

My dad wanted to take a road trip this time so we booked a room at the venetion in vegas and off we went... five glorious hours with my parents and sister. We drove up the colorado river and stopped by havasau(?) and decided to have a picnic in 100 degree weather. Of course like all korean mothers, my mom packed some rice, kim, kimchee, and bulgogi even tho we told her we didn't need it. One thing I learned... pidgeons don't like muhl-chee but they love bulgogi. Another thing I learned... moms will do what they need to do to feel like a mom.... and korean moms don't feel useful unless they pack some food!

First night in vegas... my attempt to get free buffet dinners at the wynn was a complete failure. We signed up for players cards and tried to rack up enough points to get rewards but we ended up gambling away enough money to just pay for the buffet... stupid vegas... they got us.

We tried getting tickets to watch a cirque du soliel show but all the cheap seats (still $100) were all taken so we decided to settle for the 3rd row splash seats that cost us 160 a pop... I'm still wondering if it was worth $650 to watch people jump, spin, and splah into a pool of water. Why is it called "O"? maybe it's not O but zero... as in the amount of money I had left over after spending $100 bucks at the bar waiting for the show to start. Regardless, I'd recommend it. It's better than le reve. Also had a couple of celebrity sightings... Jason Taylor and the original Hulk from the TV series. Mrs. Taylor is hot.

Then we drove 4.5 hours to the grand canyon. I don't know about you guys but maybe it's cause I'm getting older... but mang... i got dizzy looking into that crazy canyon.

Then it was a 2 hour trip to Flagstaff. Nothing there. We had dinner at this restaurant called Buster's. It was voted best restaurant in Flagstaff in 2007. I think everyone that voted ate there after smoking a huge blunt cause that place sucked. I had a blackened fresh mahi mahi and it tasted like blackened stale tuna. I guess it's my fault for ordering sea food in the middle of the desert. We stayed in a holiday inn and my family was hugely disappointed at how crappy the hotel was compared to vegas. Seroiusly... i highly recommend NOT staying at a crappy hotel after staying at a nice one. It felt like I was sleeping in commons south 5028... with fungus and all the other great things that the room had to offer. Which reminds me... I can't believe Bob and jihoon got that room after me and jon kong just completely destroyed it the year before. man... if they only knew...

Next up was Sedona. Three words... mini grand canyon.

Next was Prescott. There's nothing there. Don't go there.

I'm glad that the road trip is over... not cause i ended up driving the whole time but because my parents were getting on my nerves. I haven't lived with my parents since I was 16 and this might be the first time I've been with them 24/7 for 5 days straight. It was like they were trying to cram all the life lessons and lecturing during this trip and holy cow... I wanted to punch myself so i could knock myself out. I know they have good intentions but they make me feel like i'm 12 all over again. The sad part is, I'm leaving in a couple days and i'm gonna miss them again.

Which brings me to this final statement. Don't take your family for granted... they're the only ones on this planet that will love you no matter how much you suck.

PS. for all you golfers that want to come out to arizona and play... don't play we-ko-pa cause you'll just get really really depressed... it almost makes you wanna quit.

Elevator

There was some guy that stuck in an elevator for 41 hours. I think  I'd go crazy.... especially if i had to go #2.

This reminds me of the time I got stuck in the dorm room elevator at UIC. The elevator was very fragile so if you made any sudden movements, it'll get stuck or just not work at all. One day, I was in it with my friend Nick who decided to shake the elevator by hitting the wall with his butt... almost like he was humping the wall.... and the elevator stopped. I looked at him and freaked out then pryed the door open and climbed out. I'm just glad I wasn't in there for 40 hours... especially with Nick! skibbidy skibbidy skibbidy...

Korean Kraze

Have you guys noticed how much attention Korean food is getting? I went to San Soo a couple week ago during dinner time and the place was packed with white people. First it was Cho Sun Oak and now San Soo. And now there are Korean restaurants that are for white people only... eg Jin Ju. I'm not saying I don't approve of this... I honestly think it's a good thing since it's giving Korea more exposure to the white folks but there were a couple of things that got on my nerves.

1. Jin Ju - I went to this restaurant for a birthday party. It was open bar and the choices were a list of different "sojutinis". I had quite a few of these and I realized something - no matter how much you dress up soju... it's still soju with all its soju hangover glory.  Much love to optimo for setting this up but I think that's the last time I'm ever going there for the open bar party.

2. Berry Chill - First of all, if you're gonna copy Pinkberry/Red Mango, why not copy every single part of it? As you walk in, the first thing you think is "this is pinkberry" except they use giant LCD tvs for menus. Haven't you guys heard? The whole world is trying to go green... no need to burn crystals all day to show a menu.... a menu of all 3 flavors and 3 sizes that you guys offer. Also, try putting that white powder on the mochi dduk so that they don't stick together... it'll help your workers out so they won't use their hands to smash them into the side of my yogurt. Also, chill with the attitude on how your yogurt has real live cultures making it real yogurt compared to pinkberry's fake yogurt... we don't care... at least I don't. And the taste... ugh.. the taste. If you thought pinkberry tasted bad... this tastes like pinkberry served in dirty socks.

3. Crisp - Ok... I honestly don't mind this place THAT much. It's owned by some half german half korean guy. He's actually a really nice guy and he takes the time to get to know the customers as they order (kinda reminds me of a hyper Doug Sohn aka Hot Doug). The food is ok but today, I tried a korean burrito. yes.... a korean burrito. I guess it's really my fault cause honestly... a korean burritto... 'nuff said.  What's next?  Korean red bull? we should call it bacchus d.

I'm sure there will be many more to come in the future. I'll post up more later if I come across anything else that gets on my nerves... that's if xanga still exists.

bon chon and some other stuff

Don't believe what people say about bon chon chicken. It's all hype. They sell the same amount of chicken in a popeye's family bucket for twice the cost and a pitcher of beer was 25 bucks. Sure it's New York and the cost of living is higher but 25 for a pitcher? I expect this from a white establishment not at a Korean one. Anyway, back to the chicken. If you happen to try it, get all wings in hot garlic. Mmmmm just thinking about it makes me hungry. The problem I had with the giant drumsticks was there wan't much flavor... the very thing I was afraid of. So will I eat it again? Yes. Do I prefer this over traditional hot wings? Yes. Do I think this chicken deserves all the attention it's getting? Nes.

Happy new year everyone. Hope your resolutions become... resolved. What are mine you ask? Well since you asked here are some worthy of mentioning.

Lose 5 lbs
Go on vacation- visit the bay area
Find guitar hero for the wii
Master through the fire and flames on expert
Aquire a s5

There are plenty more but a little more personal. I probably won't fulfill them but it's good to have it out there instead of them being hidden and eventually forgotten to be forever lost.

Let's see... What else. Oh yeah. A new year only means we're all getting a year older. I personally like to believe we're getting a year wiser. I will soon be 28 years wise...er. I can honestly say i'm nearing the time in my life where it's time to worry about worrying about the rest of my life. Does that make sense to anyone? I don't think its fair to say i'm old. I know far too many people that are like way older than me and we're in the same boat. All I gotta say is ... This boat sucks. Anyway, I hope everyone the best of luck with this new year and remember, always do what makes you happy. Until next year!

NY... again.

I have to say... I'm getting pretty sick of NY. The people, the lights, the traffic... it's all just too much after a while.

A few things  that I experienced/saw this past weekend...

Steak house. I love steak. Last time I went to Plataforma and Mesa Grill... both just ok. Plataforma is a fogo and mesa grill is a bobby flay restaurant which I thought was below par. This time we checked out Del Frisco Double Eagle Steak House at the corner of Avenues of the America and 48th. I think there are other locations around the country but not in Chicago. Cost is around $40-$60/steak with no sides... they're all extra - another reason why I love chicago chop house... they give you potatoes with your steak. Anyway, they have this massive double porterhouse for $100 which I wanna try next time. I recommend the double eagle strip. I think it was a 26 oz strip with a pepper crust... very similar to gibsons. It was $60. Ck had the porterhouse... which I thought was good but not as good as mine. She thought it was better than my strip steak but she's a girl... what does she know about steak... what do they know about anything? gosh.

What else...

Oh... I saw a couple eating food out of the trash on the street. I guess it's really not that uncommon since it's NY and there are hungry bums all over the place... but this couple didn't look homeless. They were also on bikes (treks I believe) and were wearing clean clothes. Maybe they're doing some kind of bike across America thing and they ran out of money. One thing's for sure... I almost threw up watching them.

I also tried Pinkberry. For those who don't know what this is, it's some phenomenon that started out in the LA area... a yogurt/soft serve place that people wait 30+ minutes for. I waited maybe 5 minutes since it was around closing time, so there... one more reason for me to NOT hate it. I got a 5 oz original with 1 topping (captain crunch) while ck got a 5 oz green tea with strawberries and mochi dduk. It came out to be $11. Eleven freaking dollars. So now I'm thinking this crap better have crack in it or something. I took a bite... and it had this weird taste to it... almost like that korean yogurt (yogooroot). It's wasn't too sweet but it had this weird fresh sweet taste... dunno how to explain it. At first, I couldn't understand why people would wait in line for it... and I still don't think it's worth waiting in line for 30 minutes but I have to admit... I want it right now. Would I wait 30 minutes for it? No. Is it worth 5 bucks? Maybe 3.50. Are there crazy people out there that make this place super rich?? Absolutely. Conclusion: It's an Americanized version of pot bing soo which I was never a very big fan of. Girls love it cause it has almost 0 calories. Now that I think about it... the place was packed with mostly girls... but they were fobs.... and we all know how girl fobs are - generally kind in nature but have horrible american accents and they tend to fight with the korean american girls at clubs. Must be a territorial thing. Why must they fight? can't they just mark their territory and pee on poles instead? Don't dance on it... pee on it.

Ok... I looked up their website while writing this. It's www.pinkberry.com (duh) and good god... they have this pop up that plays this stupid song. Anyway, spare yourself and just close it immediately.

I heard they copied some place called Mango Berry. Freaking Koreans. Always copying and making it their own. Lets open one up in the north suburbs and bank off rich korean kids that drive bmws that they got for their 16th birthday. I'm gonna call it crackberry. Who wants in?

...I'm still listening to the music. Even this stupid song is like crack...

p-i-n, k-b-e, r-r-y pinkberry. pinkberry for me... pinkberrrrrry.
